Mass of Anointing

On Saturday, June 12th, we celebrated the healing power of the Spirit of Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of the Sick. In the context of Mass, the priests laid hands on those seriously and/or chronically ill and those preparing for or recovering from surgery and anoint them with the Oil of the Sick which was blessed by Cardinal O’Malley on Tuesday of Holy Week. A luncheon followed in our Gathering Space.

St. Agatha School, in cooperation with Facing History and Ourselves, sponsored an evening with Dr. Terrence Roberts, one of the “Little Rock Nine”. He addressed an assembly of middle schools students, their parents, and other individuals interested in fostering peace among races. He spoke eloquently about his journey as a youth. He described in detail his entrance into Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas which at that time in history was a” white” school. He engaged the audience with his stories of integration, and how they affected him personally. He spoke of his deep faith in God, and how this helped him through the dark times. It was through his faith in God, his encounter with Dr. Martin Luther King’s belief in non-violence, and his personal commitment to his belief in social justice that he was able to overcome and endure the hardships of integrating Little Rock Central High School.
He addressed the fact that prejudice is still alive and well, and how some people still suffer the effects of racism and prejudice. Dr. Roberts gave examples form his own personal life to illustrate this reality.
It was a truly a wonderful night full of encouragement for the future of our children, and the possibility of true peace and reconciliation among races. The hope is that all races will be able to live in harmony.
