It is a great privilege and a great responsibility to be pastor of St. Agatha Parish. The pastor’s role is to sanctify, to teach, and to govern the parish to which he is assigned. That is, he is to ensure that the sacraments are celebrated validly, prayerfully, and with the dignity that is their due, so as to bring glory to God and to communicate God’s love, strength, and mercy to the people who share in them.
The pastor as teacher is charged with communicating the truths of Christ as handed down in Scripture and in the teaching of the Catholic Church so that these truths are clearly and effectively communicated to the people of the parish. The pastor as the one who exercises the responsibility of governing must ensure that the spiritual needs of parishioners are met, the church property is kept in good condition, and the financial resources of the parish are properly safeguarded and utilized in the most efficient manner to serve the material needs of the parish, the parishioners, and those organizations and people whose needs the parish attempts to meet and support.
Ultimately the point of it all is to bring Christ to the parish and to lead the parish into an ever deeper relationship with Christ and to a greater commitment to reach out and serve others in Christ’s name.
